B-i-g – P-o-p-p-a  got it all wrong in his “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems” anthem. (10 cool points if you actually spelled out and rapped his name like the song 🤑)  If you search your mind of all the problems you currently have, how many of them could be solved with more money?  Like, actually think about it and dream a little. If your income doubled, or tippled, or even quadrupled at this very moment, what in the world would you be worried about? That thought and daydream alone is exciting for some and terrifying for others.

I recently read a book titled “Mind Over Money. Overcoming the Money Disorders that Threaten our Financial Heath”. The authors, father and son psychologists, dove into the various hang ups and dysfunctions that many people unknowingly have about money.

They argue that those money hang ups are actually “blocks that are products of subconscious beliefs and thought patterns, rooted in our childhoods, that are so deeply ingrained in us, they shape the way we deal with money our entire adult lives.”

From their studies, it’s easy to determine if you have your own money hang ups. For instance, overspending, undersaving, anxiety when money is involved, and keeping secrets from loved ones or family in regards to money, can all be symptoms of your money blocks.

If you experience any of those results, it can be beneficial to trace them back and identify their origins. If your parents fought over money and you witnessed those arguments, you may have picked up a fear of money by equating it with negativity and subconsciously keep it away from you in your adult life. If there was never enough money and times were rough or strained, you may have developed your own fears of not having enough or hoarding all the money you earn.

Think about your own current money patterns and think back to your parents and how they handled money. Recognize any similarities? Identifying any fears or blocks? I personally have experienced financial loss as a child through money mismanagement by my parents, so I battled an unhealthy fear and uncomfortable anxiety with having enough money and being able to pay bills. I never saw my mom “treat” herself, so I often notice a dismissal of myself when it comes to shopping and feel content only with taking care of bills and financial responsibilities.

The times that I have “splurged” or bought myself luxury items, I’ve battled guilt. I can remember buying a necklace and bracelet from Tiffany & Co. that I absolutely loved and then returning it the next day because I didn’t feel like I “deserved” to spend that much money on myself when I probably should have saved it instead. At times throughout the years, I’ve let that be apart of my identity and beat myself up to depression if I had financial struggles or difficulties. I let money and how much or how little I had affect my self-worth and self-value. I’ve given tons of it away and helped family and friends even when it wasn’t financially responsible of me to do so, because I felt guilty that I had it and they didn’t.

So I definitely get the old adage of “mo’ money, mo’ problems” but I believe it’s not the money itself that poses the problem but the way you feel about the money that causes the problem. I want you to have mo’ money and NO problems! I want you to be financially balanced. Every single person deserves to have money in abundance. There’s no price to pay for that right. If you want it, you deserve it and should have it. If you don’t want it, you should take a deep look inside as to the reasons why you don’t. It should flow and come and go easily, with no effort and you should value its ability. There’s a time to save and a time to spend and there’s definitely a time to cash out and turn up. Treating yourself feels good and denying yourself no matter the validation feels bad.

I find that many people never really have a “money” problem. They have a problem with their emotions in regards to money. They have money blocks and fears that are stopping their financial greatness.
